The hills that taught India coffee

In the 17th century, a Sufi saint named Baba Budan returned from Yemen with seven coffee beans hidden in his beard. He planted them in the hills now named after him - Bababudangiri, in Karnataka.

Three and a half centuries later, Ratnagiri Estate grows in those same hills. The cherries ferment for 42 to 72 hours, then dry slowly on raised beds.

Questions

How should I store it?

In an airtight container, away from light and heat. Don't refrigerate.

Why only whole bean?

Coffee starts losing flavor the moment it's ground. Whole bean keeps it fresh until you brew.

If you don't have a grinder, even a small inexpensive one will significantly change what you taste. We're happy to recommend one. Just email us.

What do "washed," "natural," and "honey" mean?

They're processing methods, or how the coffee fruit is removed from the bean after harvest.

Washed coffees taste cleaner and brighter, with the flavors of the bean itself.

Natural coffees taste fruitier and bolder, because the bean dries inside the fruit.

Honey is in between, with some fruit left on during drying.

How is this different from coffee I get at the store?

Two things. We source directly from the farm. And we roast in small batches, so the bag in your hand was roasted recently, not months ago.

What if I don't like it?

Tell us. We'll make it right with a refund, a replacement, or a different coffee on us. Coffee is personal, and we'd rather you find one you love than keep a bag you don't.
